In 1882 the beautiful little iron full-rigger Georg State was launched in Copenhagen for the newly-formed Training Ship Association.  She was a very small ship, only 100ft. long and 203 tons register, but although built of iron her rig was designed on the lines of the old sailing frigate.

As originally launched she had a steam auxiliary, with a lifting propeller as fitted to the auxiliary warships of the time.  She is sometimes referred to as an auxiliary steamer, but she was always a sailing vessel, with a very rarely used seam engine as an auxiliary.

After about 1905 she was given a motor in place of the steam engine, and at this period several alterations were made about decks, including enlarging both fo’c’sle and deckhouse.

She served as a Danish training ship until replaced by the new Georg Stage in 1934, when she was bought by Mr. Alan Villiers who renamed her Joseph Conrad and then sailed her round the world, making the two-year voyage which forms the subject of his Cruise of the Conrad.

The plans described below show her at this period, and have been compiled from the original construction drawings, including the alterations made by Mr. Villiers for his long voyage.  In the main these consisted of stowing the boats inboard instead of in davits, and a new companion aft, with these exceptions the plans are also correct to the ship as she was during most of her training days under the Danish flag.

Hull plans of the ship prior to 1905, with the steam auxiliary and shorter fo’c’sle and deckhouse, are however available as described below.  The Lines Drawing and Sail and Rigging Plan will be the same for both periods.
